Writer Michael Ropers recently wrote a piece for the BBC on how to be an editor-in-chief.
But it was not what many would have expected.
Michael has a background in advertising and publishing and has written for newspapers and magazines.
He has been the creative director of digital marketing company The Big Media Group and is currently based in New York City.
“I started writing for the news after graduating from university.
I was always interested in writing about journalism and how the press works, but I didn’t think I’d be writing for a national news organisation, but for the very same company, BBC News.
It was a bit of a shock, but in the end I found myself at the BBC and found myself working in the same room with the BBC News editorial team.”
Michael says that, even after his experience, he has had some advice for other writers to consider when deciding what to do.
As a writer, you have to know your limits, he says.
“You have to think about what is going to be good for you as a writer and also what is the kind of person you are going to work for, what is what’s expected of you, and what you’re really capable of doing.
So you’ve got to really think about that before you decide.”
One of the things I learnt as a journalist was to never give up.
When I went to the BBC to do a story on the BBC’s decision to close its doors, I said I was going to write it anyway.
You have no control over what the paper’s going to do, but you can control what you do, how you write it and how it feels.
In a sense, it’s an important lesson that I’ve been using for myself.
“I had a few other things going on in my life at the time, so I was really grateful for that.”
Michael is now working as a full-time freelance writer.
